Navy cadets have Devine staff

Winner of the Australian Navy Cadets Staff Member of the Year award for NSW/ACT, Cathy Devine, with daughters Rebecca and Kelly, who are also naval cadets.

Generally children follow in the footsteps of their parents, but in the case of petty officer Cathy Devine from the TS Lismore Navy Cadet Unit, it was the other way round.

Cathy was inspired to join the naval cadets as a volunteer in 2004 after watching her daughter Rebecca take part in weekend activities, and soon decided to complete her full training at the HMAS Penguin in Sydney. Last week, after only 15 months with the Unit, Cathy was named the Australian Navy Cadets Staff Member of the Year for NSW/ACT an outstanding and well-deserved achivement according to her boss.

It didnt take long before Cathy became invaluable, said commanding officer, Andrew Horn. Shes just gone from strength to strength and continues to surprise us daily with her level of skill and commitment.

Cathy is now the Units publicity officer, although in this case, it was Andrew who rang the media with news of her award.

I didnt even know I had been nominated, Cathy said. I just opened a newsletter on my email to find that I had won the award. I was in shock then and I still am to be honest.

The TS Lismore Navy Cadet Unit in Ballina is always looking for new recruits. To get involved phone Cathy on 0429 364 333.
