Local playwright tunes in to change

When Lisa Walker saw a typical old country-style motel in her hometown of Lennox Head transform overnight to a modern, hip backpackers, her imagination went into overdrive.

Why would the owners have suddenly decided to change their business? What could have been the impetus? What effects could it have on the town?

Lisa began writing a radio play Baddest Backpackers, which will be broadcast on ABC Radio Nationals program Airplay this Sunday, May 11, at 3pm (and repeated the following Friday at 9pm).

Its a play about change, Lisa said. A woman in her 60s who has lived a conventional life all of a sudden realises she doesnt need to continue down the same path and that she can be brave enough to do anything.

Lisa began writing for radio when she went to a workshop with local playwright Janis Balodis run by the Northern Rivers Writers Centre.

Its a challenging format to write in because its entirely dialogue-based but its nice to be constrained by a structure, Lisa said. Theres a limit and you have to be creative within that limit. I like the challenge of only having dialogue to show whats happening in your story.

Lisa is working on another radio play, which she also hopes will be picked up by the ABC, and a novel.
