Web cam for river bar online soon

A live web camera will soon be installed at the Richmond River bar in Ballina to help boaties check out conditions before venturing out to sea.NSW Maritime has extended its three-year trial of web-cam vision of NSW coastal bars to help boat owners prepare for a voyage offshore and address bar crossing safety in the state.

Many boats are swamped or capsized when crossing bars in rough conditions and the Richmond River bar is no exception.

The cameras are similar to surf web cams, which show what surfing conditions are like.

The Richmond River bar camera, which will be able to be accessed at www.maritime.nsw.gov.au, is expected to be online in the next few months, according to Ports and Waterways Minister Joe Tripodi.

This Easter, five more web cameras were installed at NSW coastal bars including Tweed Heads and Coffs Harbour, making 15 along the NSW coastline.

Being able to view live online vision of bar conditions and weather forecasts will help people make more informed decisions when planning a trip.
