Changes to student payments

Changes to student payments

Austudy and Masters students on the Northern Rivers heading back to university or TAFE may be financially better off this year following recent changes to student payments from Centrelink.

Centrelink northern NSW spokesperson Brian Small said that from January 1 this year, certain Masters students may now be eligible to receive Youth Allowance or Austudy.

As a result of this change, many students who need to complete a Masters by coursework to gain entry into a profession will be now eligible for Youth Allowance or Austudy, Mr Small said.

In addition, students paying private rent and receiving Austudy are now entitled to claim rent assistance.

He urged students to check their eligibility for extra assistance. You can visit Centrelinks website at www.centrelink.gov.au or phone 132 490.
