Toyota Fortuner revealed: brand's sixth SUV for Australia

TOYOTA has revealed its new seven-seat Fortuner SUV, which will join RAV4, Kluger, FJ Cruiser, LandCruiser Prado and LandCruiser 200 Series in the Australian lineup from October.

The all-new large SUV will launch in Australia just after the forthcoming next-gen HiLux, with the same underpinnings and body-on-frame chassis as the ute, but with a coil sprung rather than leaf sprung rear.

Toyota Australia says there is a place for the new Fortuner it its already comprehensive SUV lineup, bringing a diesel alternative to petrol-only Kluger buyers, and a serious off-road alternative at a lesser price than LandCruiser Prado or LandCruiser 200.

Prices and full specifications for Australia are yet to be confirmed, but three grades will be offered at launch - GX, GXL and Crusade - all with HiLux's 130kW/450Nm 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine. Both a six-speed manual and a six-speed auto will be offered.

Part-time four-wheel-drive and seven-seats are across the range, with mechanical rear diff lock and towing capacity of 3000kg for manuals and 2800kg for autos.

Toyota Australia expects a five star safety rating for the Fortuner, with reverse camera, seven airbags and emergency stop signal all standard.

All models will feature front and rear air conditioning, Toyota Link, side steps, disc brakes all round, 17-inch or 18-inch wheels and a cooler/heater box.

The two higher grades are fitted with roof rails, fog lamps, reverse parking sensors, keyless smart entry and start, and downhill assist control.

At the top-of-the-range, features include bi-LED headlamps and LED daytime running lamps, a power back door and 18-inch alloys with highway tyres.

Full pricing and specs will be released closer to Fortuner's October launch.
