Wetland art prized by new gallery

An exhibition of prize-winning entries in an art/photography competition to mark World Wetlands Day will be opened in Ballina this Friday, February 1.

The winners in the WetlandCare National Art Competition 2008, which drew over 300 entries, will be announced at the Northern Rivers Community Gallery in Ballina this Friday at 2pm.

World Wetlands Day, an international event proclaimed by the United Nations, is on February 2.

The art and photography competition focuses on the theme of World Wetlands Day 2008 Healthy Wetlands, Healthy People and has categories for both children and adults.

The day is used to highlight the benefits to human health of maintaining healthy wetlands and the dangers of mismanaging wetlands that result in declining health and even the loss of life.

The art competition includes several cash prizes, including two worth $2,000.

Anyone is welcome to attend the opening and prize announcement at the gallery, at 44 Cherry Street, Ballina.

The exhibition will run throughout February. The gallery is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
