Unique experience for Casino kids

On the surface, it looks like a fun week away learning about science, but according to Aunty Vivian Lambert, the benefits of a trip to the Siemens Science Experience in Sydney go much, much deeper.

Ten Casino High School students recently attended the three-day Siemens Science Experience at Macquarie University, which is designed to make science fun and encourage more young people into the fields of science, engineering and technology.

The students got to rub shoulders and learn from some of the brightest scientific minds in Australia and have some hands-on fun, which included making dry ice fountains, slime and elephant toothpaste, exploring the world of spiders and investigating the make-up of ancient Roman coins, and designing wiring systems with the engineers.

Aunty Vivian, an Indigenous Elder and Casino High Schools Aboriginal liaison officer, travelled with the students and said it was an amazing experience for everyone involved.

They see that theres something beyond science it helps them understand that learning can be a really fun process, and that spills into other aspects of their lives, said Aunty Vivian. They also got an insight into what university life is like, and that inspires them to go on and finish Year 12 because suddenly they really want to go to uni. They go back to Casino and tell their friends and that in turn helps motivate the kids back home.

One of the best things is the change in their self-esteem. Its just beautiful to see them blossom from shy little things into young adults who believe they can do whatever they put their mind to. After three days all their fear was gone.
