Rotary gives Square a real heart starter

Showing off the new defibrillator which has been installed at Lismore Shopping Square recently were Lismore mayor Merv King (left), Lismore Shopping Square centre manager Geoff Gooch (right) and Rotary Club of Summerland Sunrise members (l-r) publicity officer Josephine Saunders, president Gae Ferris and bulletin editor Graham Meineke.

Members of the Rotary Club of Summerland Sunrise have bought the people of Lismore a very special gift they just hope no one ever has to use it.

The Rotary Club recently purchased a defibrillator for Lismore Shopping Square, at a cost of $2800, to ensure that anyone who suffers a cardiac arrest has help close at hand. The life-saving device keeps a persons heart ticking over until an ambulance arrives.

The Rotary Club of Summerland Sunrise was inspired to fundraise for a defibrillator after a visit by Lennox Heads Louise Owen, who had a cardiac arrest when she was 26-weeks pregnant and was saved by a defibrillator.

Louise says 33,000 people a year die from cardiac arrest and shes now on a mission to create awareness about how important it is to have defibrillators in populated areas.

Hearing Louises story made the club members really aware that its important to act quickly in a heart failure situation every minute counts, said Rotary Club of Summerland Sunrise president, Gae Ferris. The Square is a very central spot and it seemed like the most logical place for it to go. If it can save just one life, then its worth it.

Lismore Shopping Square centre manager Geoff Gooch said he was thrilled to have the defibrillator.

It offers yet another level of comfort for people who shop here, said Geoff. We already have disabled toilets, wheelchairs and a mothers room, and this is yet another great addition. We havent had the need for a defibrillator as yet, but you never know when it might happen.
