Swimming deaths prompt action

An increase in the number of drowning deaths for children has inspired another push to increase the swimming teacher numbers across the area.

New statistics from Royal Life Saving NSW revealed that regional NSW had eight drowning related deaths in 2006/07 for children under 14 years, an increase from 2005/06, said Debbie Grant of NSW Sport and Recreation. The more qualified Austswim instructors in the region, we hope, will reduce this figure.

Austswim Accreditation courses will be held in Casino and Mullumbimby from February to April 2008, with workshops available in Ballina and Lismore. Workshops allow Austswim accredited instructors to maintain their skills and accumulate professional development hours.

The next Austswim Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety course will be held at the Casino Memorial Pool on February 2 and 3.
