As Steve Alderton from Lismore Regional Gallery said, Jimmy Willing paints the underbelly of Christmas.
For the past three years the gallery has commissioned Jimmy, a local artist, to create a special Christmas decoration. This year Jimmy has painted The Tree which can be viewed in the foyer of the gallery. The cut tree is a pagan symbol long banned by the Catholic church until it was incorporated into its birth of Christ celebrations.
Other Willing Christmas paintings from previous years can be seen in the NORCO Artspace in South Lismore.
Jimmy has researched Christmas and his paintings reflect his discoveries like Kranpus who is a devil that St Nicholas got to do his dirty work. He would catch bad kids in his wicker basket. (See St Nicholas.)
His first Christmas painting for the gallery was the Australian Christmas Angel who flies with the help of magpies over Lismore.
