By cod, the carp are taking over
Anglers have been returning from the opening of the Murray cod season with good catches being reported. Two fishing west of Tenterfield scored 35 over three days with some fish up to 7kg. These western rivers should also produce yellow belly but not one was caught and there is a theory that the cod numbers are so great they have eaten out most of the yellow belly. In one particular area NSW Fisheries has stopped the restocking program as they feel the numbers of cod have reached a sustainable level. The sad part of the experience for the anglers was the number of European carp they saw. Although they only managed to catch one they saw hundreds and they looked like they were the dominant species in many places. A reminder that if you do catch a carp they should be killed. Every little effort helps to eradicate this invader. In dams out west such as Keepit, near Manilla, they are in plague proportions.
