Waste not want not at tip-free day

Lismore City Councils tip-free day at the Wyrallah Road Waste Facility last month was such a winner, another one is already planned for next year.

Councils waste education officer Kevin Trustum said the day was marked by a steady flow of traffic with more than 1200 vehicle loads of waste delivered and a large amount of recyclable material recovered.

Mr Trustum said the tip-free day had proven to be a far more effective method in dealing with bulky household items than annual kerbside collections.

Twenty-two loads went straight to the Revolve Centre to be sorted and on-sold to customers who consider one mans trash to be another mans treasure, he said.

The next tip-free day is scheduled for the third Sunday in May next year.

We hope that by then our resource recovery utility, similar to a transfer station, will be working so we will be able to divert a lot more waste away from landfill because thats out aim, to increase the amount of recycling, he said.
