Silent auction to raise money for new SES truck

Ballina SES members Darren Heapy and Samantha Keith with the old rescue truck they are trying to replace with money raised from this weekends silent auction at the Ballina RSL Club.

A silent auction is being run by the Ballina Shire SES this Saturday, December 15, in the hope of raising $10,000 towards a new $120,000 rescue truck.

Ballina SES spokesperson Ian Fitzsimmons says the unit is heavily involved in road crash rescue, industrial accidents and has farm and airport responsibilities, and the current rescue truck is simply becoming too unreliable.

Our ex-military rescue truck is 20 years old now and is starting to fail us, he said. Were here to help the community and the truck is an integral part of what we do the last thing wed want is for our truck to fail us in an emergency situation. Ive never been to a silent auction and Im really looking forward to having some fun... I just hope the general public is as curious as me!

Ian says local businesses have been incredibly supportive and there are some great prizes to bid for including an MP3 player and kitchen appliances as well as accommodation on the Gold Coast, a dolphin encounter in Coffs Harbour and hundreds of other goodies.

The night will be hosted by comedian and Echo entertainment writer S Sorrensen, the Ballina Youth Choir will perform and there will be plenty of other entertainment and surprises.

The auction is on this Saturday, December 15, in the Ballina RSL Club auditorium from 5pm. Entry is free.
