Farmers betrayed over GM bill

North Coast Greens Upper House MP Ian Cohen has slammed the government and the Coalition for their blatant betrayal of farmers by passing the GM food crop bill through the Upper House on Tuesday night.

Mr Cohen said the NSW Governments bill paving the way for GM food crops such as canola was passed with Coalition support.

All amendments moved by the Greens were voted down, including an amendment on strict legal liability that would have shifted the burden of responsibility for GM contamination and subsequent economic loss to the biotech companies pushing the technology, he said. Its a depressing sign of the times that the politicians elected to represent rural NSW have so utterly abandoned their own support base the Nats have failed their core constituency.

It was predictable, dirty politics supporting big agri-business by the ALP. The government created many losers last night with this bill farmers, consumers and the environment, he said.
