Weedbuster Day a real winner

The first-ever Weedbusters Field Day at Shelly Beach on October 28 was opened by councillor Sharon Cadwallader (left) after a Welcome to Country by Bundjalung Elder Vivienne Simpson (centre).

Cheryl Cochrane (right), representing Northern Rivers Wildlife Carers, explained the plight of wildlife when habitat is lost by development, clearing and bushland weed infestation.

Fifteen local community groups and associations were represented at the community day, which featured information and demos, lucky draws and guided tours to demonstrate the damage weeds inflict on the coastal environment and the methods needed for controlling them.

The day was a huge success and it is hoped it can now become an annual event.

Volunteers are always needed for rehabilitating public land around Ballina. To volunteer, or for advice on environmental weed control, phone the East Ballina Landcare Group on 6681 3557 or write to PO Box 166, Ballina, NSW, 2478.
