Another ethanol plant backed

The Coalition has announced it will back a second ethanol plant on the North Coast with a $5 million election promise for a pilot ethanol plant at Harwood Sugar Mill.

Last week, Nationals candidate for Page, Chris Gulaptis, said Ethanol Technologies Ltd was building a pilot plant at the Harwood Sugar Mill aiming to produce ethanol in commercial quantities from feedstocks like sugar-cane waste.

He said ethanol was currently produced from food crops like wheat and sugar and that as a result, the worldwide demand for ethanol was increasing food prices.

The plant would use a chemical process rather than steam distillation to produce ethanol.

It will use far less energy and water and will not produce the effluent that is associated with steam distillation, he said.

The pilot plant should be completed and producing ethanol by 2010, he said.
