Stirring Seagulls win one man down

Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League

The Ballina Seagulls, 10 of whom will be running on for Northern United during the upcoming Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout in Lismore, produced a stirring 38-34 victory over the Tweed Coast Raiders on Sunday.

The last gasp win, which propels the Seagulls through to the major semi-finals, came despite Ballina having a player sent off in the opening 10 minutes of the game. The unsung hero for the Seagulls was goal kicker Andrew Battese, who piloted seven goals to keep the Seagulls in the contest.

Meanwhile, Marist Brothers also kept their title hopes alive with a gritty but sodden 26-nil win over Byron Bay at Oakes Oval. In a forward dominated match in heavy rain Brothers simply out-muscled their opponents.

This Saturday Brothers will take on the Tweed Coast Raiders at Cabarita and Ballina will play minor premiers Mullumbimby in Mullum.
