Greens candidate on award shortlist

Greens candidate for Ballina, John Bailey, has had his latest book shortlisted for this years National Biography Award.

Mr Stuarts Track follows the life of John McDouall Stuart, of Scottish descent, who was the first explorer to cross the continent of Australia from south to north.

Stuart led six expeditions into the arid centre in the 1850s, his ultimate goal being to cross the desert and arrive at the sea in Northern Australia. Stuart travelled light - just a few men on horseback carrying flour, sugar, tea, tobacco, dried meat, a few spare horseshoes and a single change of clothing.

Mr Stuarts Track is a fascinating study of a loner, an explorer of no fixed abode, who battled alcoholism and ill health to push himself to the limits of endurance to achieve his aim.

An Australian movie maker has signed film rights to the book.

The winner of the $20,000 prize will be chosen from six finalists and announced at the State Library of NSW on March 27.
