Skennar fighting for a test spot

Local fighter Ben Skennar (pictured) will be keen to impress when he attends the fifth Australasian Japan Karate Association Titles in Lake Taupo New Zealand from March 12 to 16. A big performance from the lanky athlete could well earn him a spot in the test match kumite (fight) scheduled for later this year.

Skennar has been training hard since his success with the Queensland State Kumite team that won gold at in Perth in 2005.

I was invited to train with the national team in the lead up to the World Cup last year, Ben said. Whilst I didnt actually compete at the World Cup, it was a good experience for future competitions. As a result I hope to keep my spot in the Queensland Kumite team and possibly make the Australian Kumite team to compete in a test match against NZ.

The titles, which include seminars as well as a competition, will be conducted by eighth-dan instructors Takahashi Shihan and Tanaka Shihan, seventh-dan sensei Nishimura and third-dan sensei Aragaki.
