Sugar farmers face exit deadline

Farmers and harvesters wanting to exit the sugar industry and claim a re-establishment grant must quit the industry and hand in their claim forms to Centrelink by June 30.

The grant is available to harvesters and growers who choose to leave the sugar industry by selling all cane farming assets, leasing (or relinquishing a lease), diversifying into new types of farming or exiting from a farming partnership, trust or company.

Retraining is available, and there is also a retirement assistance scheme, which has a cutoff date of July 12, enabling aged growers to transfer the ownership of the farm to a family member without affecting pension entitlements.

For more information phone 1800 050 585 or visit www.centrelink.gov.au.
