Music and Lyrics

Directed by Marc Lawrence

Rated PG

Tired of all those oh-so-serious Oscar contenders? In the mood for a lightweight, fun romantic comedy? Then Music and Lyrics is for you!

Hugh Grant is hilarious playing washed-up 80s pop star Alex Fletcher, one-time member of the smash hit pop group Pop.

But that was 20 years ago. Now he can only get gigs singing at amusement parks.

However, all that could change if he can just come up with the perfect song for current pop princess Cora Corman (Haley Bennett) who just happens to be a huge fan of Pop. Of course she was only seven at the time!

Bad news is Alex has only three days to write the duet and lyrics have never been his fort. So its lucky for him that his plant lady is away and her replacement, Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore), is a talented writer who has a real knack for stringing words together. It takes a lot of persuading on Alexs part, but eventually he is able to talk Sophie into helping him write the song.

Will it be a success? Will Shakira look-a-like Cora love it? Will Sophie and Alex hook up? Youll have to see Music and Lyrics to find out.

Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore dont exactly smoke up the screen but if all you want is some enjoyable fluff thats easy on the eyes and ears, and if you loved Boytown, then Music and Lyrics is a must-see.

Im well and truly over Hugh Grant as a straight romantic lead but since he isnt taking himself so seriously anymore hes an absolute hoot, and he really is fun in this.

Also terrific is Third Rock From The Suns Kristen Johnston. She plays Sophies older sister and she isnt backward in coming forward when she discovers her little sister knows her idol, Alex Fletcher.

The cast also includes Brad Garrett as Alexs manager and Campbell Scott as Sophies ex.

Music and Lyrics wont strain the little grey cells but watching Alex and Sophie make beautiful music together is an entertaining way to spend two hours.
