n end to unsolicited marketing calls

Unsolicited marketing calls could now be a thing of the past, thanks to a national Do Not Call Register. Individuals will be able to register their telephone numbers, both fixed line and mobile, and telemarketers will then be prohibited from making a wide range of unsolicited telemarketing calls to those numbers.

The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan, welcomed the announcement and said it was a direct response to the increasing level of community concern about the number of annoying unsolicited calls.

The Do Not Call Register will provide peace of mind to individuals who are distressed or concerned by receiving large numbers of telemarketing calls, Senator Coonan said.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) signed a contract with the operator of the register, Service Stream Solutions Pty Ltd, following a competitive tender process that began last year.

Senator Coonan said the register will be operational by May this year. For more information visit the ACMA website at www.acma.gov.au.
