North Coast Area Health Service chief executive Chris Crawford said this weeks transfer of patients from the now defunct St Vincents Hospital rehabilitation unit to facilities in Lismore and Ballina is going smoothly.
After the mid-December closure of the St Vincents rehab unit, patients were transferred to hospital beds or in some cases returned home over the Christmas and New Year break. They have now been accommodated in a reconfigured 12-bed rehabilitation ward at Lismore Base Hospital or in the new 18-bed Rehabilitation and Transitional Care Unit at Ballina Hospital.
These arrangements will remain in place until a new 24-bed rehabilitation unit adjacent to the Rehabilitation and Transitional Care Unit at Ballina Hospital is opened in mid-2008.
