White elephant

Lismore City Council has recently discovered that it cannot afford to pay for the running costs of our new Memorial Baths. We have a wonderful 50m pool which has the potential to be used year-round, but it will be closed in winter. Yet Council is going ahead with plans to provide the residents of Goonellabah with another white elephant.

Why spend money on a 25m pool when one already exists at the Summit? A 25m pool is considerably more limited in its use and would not attract the custom generated by a 50m pool. If Council builds a pool in Goonellabah, it should be 50m to adequately cater for young swimmers in squad training and for school swimming events. If Council cannot afford to provide the best for the residents of Goonellabah now, then it should put the plans on hold until it can do so.
