Telstra tower to improve coverage

The erection of a 40-metre telecommunications tower on a rural property near Wollongbar is set to boost mobile phone coverage in the area.

Ballina Shire Council last week approved the installation of the Telstra tower adjacent to Councils 12-metre high water reservoir on the corner of the Bruxner Highway and Converys Lane.

Council staff said only two objections were received when the plan went on public display recently, both concerned about the visual impact of the tower.

Cr Margaret Howes said she had concerns that nearby properties would be devalued by the tower but Cr Keith Johnson said it was the best place to put it in terms of community benefit.
