Winning bird

Deanne Scobie (pictured) from Goonellabah has won the 2006 John Quinnn Memorial Award for her nature story Brokenwing. Her story details a day in the life of a magpie as it provides for its family.

Her prose has a lyrical quality reflecting her skills as a poet.

The award encourages writers who have not previously won a literary prize and is conducted by the Far North Regional of the Fellowship of Australian Writers.
