Lennox Head alcohol ban

Revellers planning to celebrate New Years Eve in Lennox Heads town centre or beachfront have been put on notice that drinking alcohol in those areas will not be tolerated.

Ballina Shire councillors last week voted to ban the consumption of alcohol in the CBD, beachfront and the Lake Ainsworth area from midday on December 31 till midday on January 2.

The prohibition allows police to confiscate any alcohol being carried or drunk in the designated areas.

While most councillors welcomed the ban, Cr Peter Moore opposed it, saying banning alcohol at Lennox Head and not other parts of the shire was draconian.

But Cr Keith Johnson said other parts of the shire like Alstonville were not considered for the ban because they were not a magnet for revellers as Lennox Head was.

This is a precautionary move and recognises some incidents which have occurred over the years and tries to address that, Cr Johnson said.
