Saltwater Guide out now
More people fish over the Christmas holidays than at any other time of the year. As this article is being written there are only 14 days until the Christmas fishing rush. This extra pressure on the fishery is probably why people catch less fish, but fishing is a great family pastime.
NSW Fisheries has just released the latest Saltwater Guide, which has in it current regulations and helpful hints on fishing. Copies are available from the Department of Primary Industries or at Suffolks Sports in Lismore. The main species caught by the family angler will be bream, flathead and whiting in the rivers and on the beaches.
Last week we mentioned the bass being very good at Clarrie Hall Dam and they seem to just get better, with three anglers getting over 200 in one day and on another occasion 123. These fellows put in long days (up to 14 hours) but it does go to show how stocking our impoundments has provided a great sportfishing environment. Queensland still leads the way with restocking and this is evidenced with locals from Lismore travelling to dams such as Awoonga and coming back with catches of over 20 barramundi, with many over a metre in length.
