Ballina Shire Council has added their voice to the growing call for a moratorium on coal seam gas mining in the region. Council voted at their meeting last week to send a letter to the state government calling for a moratorium, joining Lismore, Byron, Kyogle, Tweed and Rous Water councils.
Mayor Philip Silver said, “There is clearly disquiet in the community about new technologies in the region and Council thought it best to take a more conservative position and request a moratorium until open issues are resolved.
“The message is simple: state government, this is your area of responsibility and it’s time to step up and explain to everyone what precautions are in place to make sure aquifers are not being damaged.”
