Nimbin stirred up by coal seam gas

The Nimbin Environment Centre (NEC) is holding a coal seam gas forum at the Nimbin Bush Theatre next Tuesday, April 26, from 5pm.

The meeting will include talks by Ngarwakwal Elder Harry Boyd; NEC activists who recently returned from direct action at Tara in Queensland; Keerrong Gas Squad members who went to Canberra to lobby ministers and political advisors; Tweed Lock the Gate members; and an update on the proposed Lion’s Way pipeline from Leah and Paul Hobbs of Lynchs Creek.

“We’ve never seen people so stirred up over an issue as they are over coal seam gas,” Lisa Green from NEC said. “It really hit the fan after the Border Ranges World Heritage area was opened to mining exploration without any consultation with landowners. Lots of people have been coming into the shop and phoning wanting to get information and make connections. From the Lion’s Way to Byron Bay folks are planning to do something to protect our area from environmental devastation before bulldozers turn up at their properties, so they’re coming to our meeting to strategise, make connections and exchange information. Now is the time to act before it’s too late.”
