At last year’s Dairy Spectacular were Travis Deenes and family with their champion cow and Mr Jim Dickenson of Richmond Dairies in Casino.
There was movement at the showground, because word had got around, that the cream of the cream of stud bulls and milkers will be on show at the Dairy Spectacular this month. On September 17 and 18, cattle will be arriving from the north, south and west for one of the biggest displays of stud dairy cattle on the eastern seaboard when Lismore hosts the NSW Illawarra and the Queensland State Holstein feature shows.
Even if you don’t know anything about cattle and dairy, come along and see where your milk comes from and learn about the different breeds of cattle.
“If you’ve never met a cow come along and get to know one and their owner,” organiser Carol Hill said. “Cows have great personalities; every one is different.”
There will be an automated robotic milking machine in operation, as well as milking competitions. On Friday, September 17, the youth program kicks off with children showing their skills in leading dairy cows and in judging the udder shapes and teat placement of dairy cattle. On Saturday, September, 17 the milk classes in their different breeds – Jersey, Holstein, Illawarra, Gurnsey, Brown Swiss, Ayrshire and the supreme interbreed champion – will be judged by a panel of international judges.
“To show cattle and to work 24/7 takes a lot of devotion,” Ms Hill said. “The farmers don’t do it for money or glory, it’s in your blood.”
Farmers and families are encouraged to come along for displays of everything dairy related, from stud breeders to cattle supplements and farm equipment. Food and drinks will also be available.
Entry is free to the Dairy Spectacular at the Lismore Showgrounds from 9am till 2.30pm each day.
