Checking the ties that bind us

Growing Gardens: We're heading into the months when we can expect strong winds.

We’re heading into the months when we can expect strong winds. Wind-rock – when shrubs and trees have their grip on the soil loosened by the wind – is more of a danger this year because we have had such good winter rains so the earth is softer than usual.

Some dwarf fruit trees need permanent staking. Dwarfing happens because the trees’ root systems are inadequate to provide water and nutrients to a standard tree, and that also means that the roots are incapable of supporting the top growth in a strong wind.

Use three star pickets arranged in a triangle well away from the trunk. Ideally, install these when planting the tree so you can be sure you won’t damage the roots. Using soft, flexible ties around the trunk, attach the tree firmly to all three stakes.

If you have any permanent staking installed, now is the time to check that the ties are not perished or weak and that there is no chafing of the underlying bark. Loosen or replace tight ties and check that no pests are hiding under them.

Smaller shrubs such as blueberries are often sold tied to a light bamboo stake with a plastic twist-tie. These should be removed when planting, as the internal wire of the tie will cut into the plant. Replace it, if you believe the shrub needs temporary staking, with a stronger stake and tie in the plant with one or two soft ties. The best place for a single stake is on the side of the shrub from which the strongest winds blow – if you put it down-wind, the plant will be blown against the stake.
