Weathering what the heavens bring

The weather had the ultimate say on Round One of the Tursa Anzac Cup and Callan McMillan Shield competitions last weekend, with only four matches played.

In Men’s Premier division, Byron Bay and Ballina played out a 1 all draw, in a game that saw both outfits trial fairly different teams to last season. While new Ballina coach Rod Troughton had only his second chance this season to see the seasiders in action, his opposition coach, the wily Peter Ware had his team on the pitch for the first time in 2010.

In the Open A Men’s competition Rovers drew 2 all with Burringbar and Lennox Head’s top side drew 2 all with South Lismore, suggesting that some close action may be expected in 2010. The other match that went ahead in this division saw Goonellabah defeat Lennox Head (number two) 4 goals to nil, confirming the depth at Weston Park.

The women’s competition was restricted to one game only when Lennox Head played Bangalow. Rescheduling of the washed out matches from this round will be played on Friday, March 26, and Sunday, March 28, except for the Premier Men’s game between Goonellabah and Lismore Workers, who will meet on Tuesday, March 30, at 6.30pm. The Hornets have a State League match on Saturday, March 27, as part of the Northern NSW State Cup, giving them more time on the pitch then any other team so far this year.

Players are reminded that while all Anzac Cup and Callan McMillan games are unlimited inter-change, they are not like trial matches where clubs can use a variety of players in the match. All players must be registered in the specific squad to participate.
