United they stand

Editorial: One local rugby league team is taking a leadership role in addressing the difficult issue of domestic violence.

While sportsmen in the national eye continue to behave appalingly – whether it’s sending naked pictures of ex-girlfriends to mates or excessive nights of booze, drugs and violence – one local rugby league team is taking a leadership role in addressing the difficult issue of domestic violence.

The Northern United club is a wonderful example of how local sportspeople, who are leaders in the community, can be great role models.

They have discarded pursuit of the mighty dollar and banned alcohol sales at their home ground in recognition that alcohol is a factor in antisocial behaviour. The team has just volunteered to be part of a new program that requires players to participate in education and awareness initiatives about domestic violence.

It was International Women’s Day this week and I was prepared to write another piece on feminism. But I’m really glad that a local rugby league club is taking a strong stance on an issue that affects so many women.

With leadership from our local sportspeople on issues of social justice and responsibility there is real hope that our community can combat the horrible devastation of domestic violence.

And, no matter what team you barrack for, in whatever sport, or even if you’re not a sports fan at all, here’s an example of a sporting team we can all cheer for.

Go Northern United! In my book, taking steps to combat violence is worth more than a million grand finals.
