I don't, says Brandis

Amber McBride and Annabelle Keene believe same-sex couples should have the same rights as heterosexual couples.

Senator Brandis led the Coalition’s naysayers by lying to the Senate in the debate on the Marriage Equality Bill.

He stated that “never, ever in any society, in the whole of human history, been regarded as other than a relationship... that exists between a man and a woman.” Apparently in Senator Brandis’ view, Canada, Spain, South Africa, Norway, Belgium, Portugal, Massachusetts, Iowa etc are neither societies nor part of human history. Such willful ignorance must be hard to maintain in the face of global reality.

I used to be proud of Australia’s progressive social traditions, but now we lag behind a country that only a generation ago divided its citizens by skin colour.
