Seeing red over green energy

When Alstonville resident Simon Rushby signed up to green energy company Jackgreen in 2008, he was trying to do his bit to reduce carbon pollution.

Not happy Jack: Alstonville resident Simon Rushby has been caught out by the collapse of green energy company Jackgreen.

When Alstonville resident Simon Rushby signed up to green energy company Jackgreen in 2008, he was trying to do his bit to reduce carbon pollution.

“They came into Alstonville like storm troopers signing everyone up. There are three people in the block of flats here and we all signed up,” he said.

But the company went into voluntary administration on December 18 and all Jackgreen customers in NSW were automatically transferred back to their previous electricity suppliers.

The first Simon knew about was when he received a letter from Centrelink dated December 30 telling him that the automatic payment from his disability pension would no longer be going to Jackgreen.

“I was kind of in limbo so I rang Jackgreen to find out what was going on and just got a recorded message saying they’d gone into receivership,” Simon said.

He then rang Country Energy and found out he had been automatically transferred back to them and that his power supply was not going to be cut off.

Then at the end of January he got a bill from Jackgreen showing he was $74.60 in credit.

He now has to apply to the administrators PKF as an unsecured creditor and doesn’t hold out much hope of getting his money back.

Simon said his neighbour, who is also on a disability pension, is owed $150.

“There is not a lot of information out there and it’s only because I’ve really followed it up that I found out what is happening.”

Anyone else who was a Jackgreen customer should contact Country Energy to make arrangements for a new account and PKF on 8221 2270 if they were in credit on their final bill.
