In her two years as a volunteer with the Animal Rights and Rescue Group (ARRG), Louise Hunter said she has seen some horrible things.

“Things I didn’t think we, as human beings, could be capable of,” she said.

Every year after Christmas they see an increase in unwanted pets that have been dumped but this year has been particularly bad, with ARRG seeing over 150 cats and kittens since Christmas, mostly in Casino and Lismore.

“This year has been absolutely dreadful,” Louise said. “At the moment we are just overwhelmed.”

Last weekend a mother and six kittens were left on their doorstep. To help find new homes for these otherwise unloved pooches and pussies, ARRG are holding an adoption day this Saturday, February 6.

“We are desperate for new homes and we are particularly asking people to give a chance to an older kitten; from 10-12 weeks old. They tend to get dumped when they reach the leggy, teenage stage and are not so cute,” Louise said.

On Saturday there will be around 20 cats and kittens and about 10 dogs to choose from at their premises at 135 Three Chain Rd (just past Youngberry’s nursery) plus dozens of others on their website www.animalrights.org.au.

Each animal comes desexed, micro-chipped and vaccinated. Cats are $150 and dogs $180.
