The plight and brutal treatment of women in Afghanistan will be shown in a film by Afghan journalist Meena Nanji. View from a Grain of Sand covers a 50 year period, following the changes which have taken place in Afghanistan since before the Russian invasion in 1979, leading up to the present situation of Taliban repression.

Bob Oort, secretary of the Lismore branch of the Support Association for the Women of Afghanistan (SAWA) has brought the film to the North Coast to raise awareness and funds for the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA).

“The film shows how the women of RAWA continue to educate the Afghan population and provide medical facilities in the face of fundamentalism, corruption and foreign interests,” Mr Oort said.

“In Afghanistan, women are treated as slaves for men,” he said. “The fundamentalist regime of the Taliban has taken away all their rights but the women of RAWA continue to go into areas not under control of the Taliban and educate women and children.”

The film will be screened at the Birth & Beyond Centre, in Nimbin at 6.30pm on November 20. Admission is by donation, and 2010 SAWA calendars will be on sale. Anyone wishing to help the women of Afghanistan are welcome to join SAWA Lismore. For reservations, phone Bob on 6688 8264.
