Tyler just wants to ride with the bulls

TYLER Morgan is riding his way out of a form slump and hoping his $400 nomination fee for Calliope Rodeo & Ute Muster turns into some big cash.

The 19-year-old bull-rider from Monto has not missed a Calliope rodeo since he won the sheep ride when he was about five years old.

He lives to ride, working on his grandparents property at Monto during the week and travelling as far as he has to for rodeos at the weekend.

"I have a few good travelling buddies," he said.

"I don't mind the travelling, paying the nominations, because I am just happy to get on the bulls."

But staying on the bulls has been a problem for him lately.

"I was riding through a bit of a slump a couple of weeks ago," he said.

"I kept putting pressure on myself and trying too hard. I was trying to make things happen and was making silly mistakes all the time."

He turned that around when the people of Noosa threw away their Birkenstocks and held a rodeo on September 10.

Morgan won the rookie bull ride and finished fourth in the open bull ride.

He took this form to Apple Tree Creek Rodeo last weekend when he won the rookie bull ride and placed equal first in the open bull ride.

To decide who took the belt buckle, the two winners had one more ride but neither of them made the eight seconds.

So, after riding bulls all night, the rodeo was decided by a flip of the coin and, unfortunately for Morgan, he lost.

But the young rider wasn't bothered, just happy to have another crack at more bulls today and tomorrow.

"Calliope will be good. It's a good rodeo every year," he said.

"Lane Mellers, from Mundubbera, will be hard to beat. He is young and rides in the juniors, rookie and opens.

"He is really good."
