THE National's have formally endorsed New South Wales MP Richard Torbay to take on Federal independent Tony Windsor in the seat of New England at the next federal election.

Mr Torbay, who has represented the state's Northern Tablelands seat since 1999, recently served a four-year stint at Speaker of the NSW Legislative Assembly.

Federal party leader Warren Truss endorsed Mr Torbay on Saturday, saying "there can be no doubting Richard's credentials".

Mr Torbay's unopposed preselection for the seat comes after four other represent party endorsements, including David Gillespie, who will take on independent Rob Oakeshott MP in his seat of Lyne.
