A PICTURE perfect day in Byron Bay on Monday saw hordes of schoolies soaking up the sun and atmosphere at Main Beach.

A Red Bull van pumped music from the carpark at the Schoolies Hub.

The hub was in full swing and everyone was in a festive mood.

Among the groups celebrating the end of their school year were 18 teenage girls and boys from Sydney.

Eighteen-year-old Angelica Deluca said the group had chosen Byron Bay for Schoolies because of the great beaches, great food and nice people.

"Oh and we also want to visit Nimbin," one of the boys said.

Angelica said the group had gone out to Cheeky Monkeys and the Beach Hotel and had a great time.

"We feel safe here, there's no problems on the streets," she said.

"It's all calm and friendly."

Byron Mayor Simon Richardson's key message to Schoolies was "Have a great Byron holiday but please look after each other".

"Let your hair down and enjoy our magnificent shire, but be responsible for yourself and friends and be respectful to the town," he said.

"It can be tempting to go overboard, but it's just not worth the risk of harm to yourself or anyone else."

Cr Richardson said the hub at Main Beach was a great safety net for young adults.

"Staffed 24 hours a day with volunteers, the hub is a good starting place if you do need help," he said.

Police also urged schoolies to celebrate safely.

Tweed/Byron Local Area Commander Detective Superintendent Stuart Wilkins urged school leavers to make good decisions and look after each other.

"We are also reminding schoolies to think before they drink," he said.

"Alcohol impairs your judgment and leads to poor decision making, so know your limits."
