THERE'S dust, the odd dent and lots of thrills, but readers should hesitate before labelling these boys hoons.

As well as rebuilding, painting and driving their very own car, members of the 1st Ipswich Boys' Brigade (IBB) spend their time learning about faith, helping out in the community, and hiking and camping.

Since IBB captain and Boys' Brigade Queensland (BBQ) field worker Andrew Johanson launched Strive 2 Drive, the boys are especially excited about being able to drive their own Nissan Gazelle.

Mr Johanson said boys aged 12 to 18 years took part in the program.

"Initially it was about the mechanical and building side of the car, but since then it's been fitted out with a roll cage and racing seats and the boys have learnt to drive it and can now take part in motorkhanas," Mr Johanson said.

He said Strive 2 Drive came about when he realised the need for younger people to be able to learn driving skills.

"I think it's really important that young people have the chance to learn the basics of driving safely before they go out into traffic; I just can't believe that a learner driver can jump into traffic with no prior experience.

"I grew up on a farm and learnt to drive in the paddocks, and I wanted to share that experience with kids who might not have the chance otherwise.

"You hear of too many learner drivers who are killed or hurt because of a lack of experience."

Mr Johanson added there had been no serious accidents, and said Ipswich Girls' Brigade members would have a taste of the action next month.

BBQ is affiliated with CAMS, Mr Johanson's Mt Walker property is a registered venue and leaders have been fully trained.

The first Ipswich Boys' Brigade is hosted at the Central Church Ipswich, a Presbyterian church.

The group meets from 6.30pm every Friday night of the school term, and also attends camps, activity days and formal events.

Attendees aged five to 17 are placed in age groups, and there is a Girls' Brigade.
