Be Care Aware is the theme of this year's National Carers Week, pointing to the fact that carers keep caring and need ongoing support.

This year, the Northern NSW Local Health District printed thank you cards and sent just under 200 out to people in the Lismore area and across the Northern Rivers.

It was only a small gesture of appreciation, but it went a long way for those who care for others.

Dawn and Bruce Watts care for their 38-year-old grandson Chris on daily basis.

Chris has schizophrenia and has been cared for by his grandparents since the age of 14.

Bruce and Dawn have spent much of their 59 years of marriage caring from Chris.

"We are not heroes. Like any other carer, we are ordinary people," Bruce said.

"They may be ordinary people but they do extraordinary work," according to clinician Kathryn Blaich, who presented them with the card.
