Muslim immigration ban: Australian leaders reject poll

THE Essential poll finding that 49% of Australians favour a ban on Muslim immigration has failed to sway the Turnbull government and the Opposition.

Industry, Innovation and Science Minister Christopher Pyne and shadow defence minister Richard Marles were quizzed on the poll yesterday by Today Show host Karl Stefanovic.

Asked if the government was planning to ban Muslim immigration like 60% of Liberal voters wanted it to do, Mr Pyne said: "No, we are certainly not going to do that. We believe in a non- discriminatory immigration policy."

He said the poll reflected people's concern for their safety over threats against the West by IS and and other terrorist organisations.

"That's why the Government and the Opposition have to keep reassuring people about the strength of our borders and national security," he said.

Calling it a "really con- cerning survey", Mr Marles took aim at the Government.

"Christopher talks about reassurance - there is no reassurance when you've got an Immigration Minister (Peter Dutton) who talks about illiterate, innumerate refugees coming to this country stealing our jobs and being on the dole.

"He said that during the election campaign and if you want to give people a sense of confidence about our multicultural society, we've got to see leadership from our government."
