Mourinho savours triumph with Real

REAL Madrid clinched their first La Liga title since 2008 after beating Athletic Bilbao 3-0 last night.

Barcelona's 4-1 win over Malaga earlier in the night meant Madrid had to win at San Mames in the evening's late game to seal a record 32nd Spanish title. They did so comfortably, despite missing an early penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo, through goals from Gonzalo Higuain, Mesut Ozil and Ronaldo

The success means Real coach Jose Mourinho, who is in his second season at the Bernabeu, has now won league titles in four different countries.

Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick in Barça's win and in doing so he broke Gerd Müller's 39-year-old record of 67 goals in a season for a European top-flight club.

In the Netherlands, Ajax retained their Eredivisie title with a 2-0 victory over VVV-Venlo.
