Experts predict heatwave

LOOK out locals: Weather experts believe a heatwave is to hit the Northern Rivers over the next week, so prepare your fans, inflatable swimming pools, ice-cold refreshments, thongs and singlets!

Dick Whitaker, chief meteorologist at The Weather Channel, said it was set to get very hot in areas all around NSW, but the Northern Rivers was set to heat up considerably.

Both Weatherzone and The Weather Channel are predicting identical temperatures over the next few days, with today to hit 32 degrees Celsius, tomorrow and Saturday tottering to 33, while Sunday is set to hit a scorching 35 degrees.

Monday the temperature is set to inch back to 31, with Tuesday hitting 32, before Wednesday retreats slightly to a warm 28 degrees.

Weatherzone have predicted the UV index at 'Extreme' from today until Monday inclusive, so make sure you protect yourself from the sun with shade, covered clothing, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen.

And while the nights won't be as hot as the peak of daytime, Mr Whitaker said they're set to be "quite warm" even in the cover of darkness.

While thunderstorms aren't predicted, some showers may be plausible during the next week, said Mr Whitaker, while Saturday and Sunday meant to bring hot northerly winds at speeds of up to 25km/h.

Mr Whitaker said there was a "bit of a southerly change" going to come through on Sunday "which will cool it down a bit and bring an increase in cloud cover," he said.
