Rising demand for power poles
EVERYONE needs electricity. Some people have stand-alone solar or wind systems.
Good on them for encouraging renewable energy. For everyone else, the power comes via power lines which are strung from the ubiquitous wooden power pole.
Much of the electricity new work in the region was constructed during the '50s and '60s. Now the power industry is replacing a lot of the power poles.
This is where local property owners come in.
Pole supplier Koppers Wood Products is offering owners the opportunity to find out if logging of timber (for poles, sawlogs and other products) may be possible on their land.
The typical pole takes 30 years to grow and has a service life of 60 years. Timber is favoured over steel or concrete because of its strength in extreme weather, ease of use, non-conductivity and visual attractiveness.
