Knights to play Willie

WILLIE Mason has been given the green light to play for the Newcastle Knights for the remainder of the 2012 season.

NRL salary cap auditor Ian Schubert gave the all-clear on Wednesday morning for the Knights to sign the controversial forward.

Mason, who last played in the NRL for the North Queensland Cowboys in 2010, could take the field for Newcastle's feeder team in the NSW Cup this Saturday against the Illawarra Cutters.

Knights coach Wayne Bennett said he wanted Mason at the club because his forwards had struggled so far this season.
