Hair salon provides ‘little holidays' on way to award
JUGGLING a new baby and a new business has worked out well for Erica Suffolk.
Her new son Domenic was born on June 30 and Tonic Hair and Beauty, the business she started with her sister Lea Crawford, took out Best New Business at the Ballina Business Awards on Saturday.
"It was absolutely a thrill and a nice shock," she said.
"I am grateful to our customers for voting for us."
Ms Suffolk has been in hairdressing for 10 years and founded the new business after her sister, a beautician, arrived back from travelling in Europe.
"I saw there was a market for combining hair and beauty in Ballina."
Ms Suffolk said that despite the GFC and recent downtown in retail spending plus the pressure of online shopping, her business has thrived.
"Hair and beauty therapy is one of those things you just can't buy online," she said.
"Even if people can't afford holidays and other luxuries they don't skimp on hair and beauty. They treat their appointment with us as their own little holiday."
Ms Suffolk also attributes her success to her supportive staff.
