Growing for a community

DOWN within the ramshackle Little Keen Street you'll find between the houses the touch of some green thumbs.

For four years the residents of the street have been nurturing a community garden, a project which benefits all involved.

There's vegetables, herbs, chickens, an as-yet unfinished pizza oven, and a children's swing within the organic-looking gates of the garden, surrounded in the park by other play equipment and fruit trees.

As they watched the garden grew, their sense of pride and community grew with it; with families getting involved in a hands-on gardening experience.

Max Burgess, one of the dedicated gardeners said it's a fantastic physical and mental experience for the whole family.

"It is great for our kids to know where food comes from."

The atmosphere at the community garden highlights what a special and fundamental part the garden plays in the community, said Ms Burgess, who believes a garden like this is one of those educational and relaxing projects which anyone can get involved in or start themselves, with limited resources powered by energy and enthusiasm.
